FREDONIA, Ariz. – Anyone interested in learning about the construction and maintenance of mountain biking trails is invited to join a unique educational opportunity this Friday and Saturday in the Kaibab National Forest.
The International Mountain Bicycling Association’s Trail Care Crew will host its Trail Building School along the Rainbow Rim Trail, an 18-mile multiple-use trail on the North Kaibab Ranger District that connects breathtaking overlooks of the Grand Canyon.
Over two days, the workshop will provide an introduction to the IMBA and trail building theory, elements of sustainable trails, design, construction, and trail reclamation. The layout of mountain biking trails, utilization of hand tools to construct and maintain trails and the process of road-to-trail conversion will also be covered. Attendees can also take part in an optional camp-out at Timp Point on Friday night.
Participants must be properly prepared, as the trail work is far from civilization, with no facilities. Some supplies will be provided, but it is recommended to bring camping gear, food, water, sunscreen, and thick clothing for chilly nights. The entire event is free, but registration is required.
The IMBA Trail Care Crew/Trail Building School is an educational program that has toured the United States since 1997 teaching sustainable trail building practices. The program is sponsored by Subaru, Trek, and The North Face.
