ST. GEORGE – Its website boasts it to be the most exciting cycling relay in Utah, and it is nearing the end this Saturday morning. From the capitol building in Salt Lake City down Utah’s historic Highway 89 to St. George, cyclists in the Salt to Saint relay  have left Kanab and are headed into Dixie.

St. George News photographer, Dave Amodt, met up with cyclists in Kanab and on the highway heading toward Hurricane this morning.

While some cyclists sat ready to take the baton and carry on the next leg, others napped. Chandler Higgins said that the climb out of Mt. Carmel Jct. was the hardest ride he has ever done, and temperatures were in the low 40s.

Results won’t be confirmed and official until this evening, however, and there are multiple categories in the relay.

Enjoy this photo journal of southern legs of the relay – it will be updated to include the finish later in the day:

Updates:

At the finish line, Amodt reported that according to the computer at the finish line, with GPS trackers on it, Simply Mac’s 8-man team came in first in their category, beating their previous times. Trackleaders.com shows Simply Mac Racing finished second at 6:18 a.m. There is another team, Simply Mac Racing Great Old 8 who are not yet finished. Until official results are in, we defer from calling this race in any category.

What a fool, trying to nap in a gutter. Doesn’t he know that cars driven by inept simpletons routinely veer off the road and that the skull and the body simply cannot withstand the forces of being run over? Many of these bicyclists are not very bright. Of course, it might be unreasonable of me to expect mental sharpness from someone whose chosen sport requires him to wear a helmet.

The Salt to Saint relay was fantastic! The roads were well marked, and we felt safe the entire ride…until Colorado City. That’s the only place where drivers became discourteous.

Some people like to live life. Take it by the horns and make something of themselves…even if that requires wearing a helmet.
Others like to waste negative energy commenting about a story they know nothing about due to the fact that they have probably never done a physical activity in their life.
      Enjoy Murat!

Don’t take it personally, if you look around, you’ll see that Murat is the resident troll!

I don’t understand how you idiots can justify the act of napping in a gutter.

Sorry, Murat.. I’m the guy in the picture. I didn’t mean to offend you by lying on the curb. I would have been in the grass, but the sprinklers were on and I wasn’t interested in showering before my ride. Just to give you a little more information it was about 5:40 am, and the only things moving on the road at that hour were Salt to Saint cyclicsts.

I’m sorry I ruined your day by lying on the curb. I didn’t realize that drivers in Kanab were such poor drivers that they “routinely veer off the road.” Are you speaking from experience? From your comments it’s pretty easy to figure out that you’re a simpleton… do you drive? For the safety of the residents in Kanab, I sure hope not!

Unbelievable how you attempted to justify how much of a moron you are. You couldn’t sleep in the sprinklers, so the gutter is the next logical choice. Just brilliant.

Napping Fool, that’s you? Ha! How cool. What a trip you took!

Highway 59 is a poor route for cyclists. There is too much traffic and the road is too narrow.
It’s nearly impossible to give these cyclists room on the road when they’re taking up half of it, and too much oncoming traffic to go around.
I would hate to be at the wheel of a tractor trailer, coming down Hurricane hill with 40 tons of freight, and have to try to avoid the bicycles in the middle of the road.
If the state wants to allow these activities on this particular highway, then they need some serious improvements.
