Soccer round-up: Don’t count out Dixie just yet

ST. GEORGE – Despite their unappealing 2-2-3 record, the Dixie Flyers remain one of the premier soccer teams in Region 9.

Coach Burt Myers’s squad demonstrated its physical prowess Saturday by defeating a tough Canyon View team 7-0, and days earlier when it trumped Hurricane 1-0.

Unfortunately, the Flyers ran into a spurt of problems following its initial 4-0 start. For starters, it faced an up-and-coming Desert Hills squad determined to put an end to Dixie’s five game shutout streak.

The Flyers next faced back-to-back bouts against Cedar and Pine View, both of which resulted in tie ballgames.

It was during this stretch that Dixie’s lone victory against Hurricane was waved off due to a rule violation, further crippling the Flyers record.

“I think we’ve always been a strong enough team to win our games,” midfielder Cheyenne Lawrence said. “This last week was a good week for us.”

Indeed, Saturday’s game against Canyon View was to be played on Thursday, but porous weather conditions forced a delay resulting in much needed rest for Lawrence’s teammates.

“A few girls got healthy,” she said. “Everyone came out ready and prepared.”

The Falcons never knew what hit them. The score was 2-0 at halftime before Myers’ squad went off on a scoring frenzy.

Finess White scored with about 34-minutes remaining in the game, followed shortly after by goals from Elle Roberts, Cassidy Gray, Tiffany Cottom, and Kailee Brady.

“We fought hard,” Myers said. “We came to play and we put it in the net.”

With five games remaining on the schedule, including a rematch with Cedar next Tuesday, the Flyers still have time to carve a niche in Region 9’s top pool of playoff contenders.

“We can be a team that definitely changes the overall layout of region,” Myers said. “We may be able to challenge for a third or fourth playoff spot.”

Added Lawrence: “We’re a great team. We have some of the best players in southern Utah.”
