ST. GEORGE –– Snow Canyon continues to dominate.

On Friday night, the Warriors conquered their first Region 9 opponent, dismantling Canyon View 42-0.

The game was only close in the first quarter when the score sat at 0-0. From then on out, it was all Snow Canyon.

“The kids believe in what we’re doing,” Snow Canyon coach Jay Graft said. “That’s the main thing. There’s a lot of unity there, they care about one another.”

Mason Smith totaled 108 yards on the night, Brandon McFarland nabbed 122 and Mitch Phillips, who’s been absolutely spectacular of late, ran for 95 and racked up four touchdowns to boot.

“I’m happy with way things are going,” Graft said. “It’s no secret that we’ve played some teams that have struggled, but we have to make sure we’re taking a step forward each week. We have to make sure we’re preparing ourselves for the week after and the week after that.”

Despite another slow start in which Graft felt his team gave up too many yards and played sluggishly, the Warriors came alive and scored two touchdowns in the second quarter.

At halftime the score sat at 21-0. By the end of the third quarter it was 35-0.

“That first quarter was like, who are we?” Graft said. “We started slow. We’ve got to learn to come out the gate like we’re behind before we get behind.”

The Warriors first big test will come next week when they square off against Hurricane in Snow Canyon. “I think that match-up’s gonna be won in the trenches,” Graft said. “Our offensive line has to execute and stay on their blocks so we can run the football. We’ve got to do a better job of executing. We gotta step up and play with a great team if we want to be a great team.”

Since their initial loss against San Juan at the start of the season, Snow Canyon has outscored opponents 170-53.
