Soccer roundup: SC wins, Thunder and Panthers draw

ST. GEORGE — Region 9 featured only two soccer games on Tuesday night due to adverse weather conditions. As such, Dixie High was forced to postpone its showdown with Canyon View until Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

“The field was just too wet,” Flyers coach Burt Myers said. “There were ongoing thunderstorms, and our field just didn’t hold up.”

Dixie won its first four pre-season games, but has since struggled against Region 9. Their lone win against Hurricane was subsequently changed to a loss due to an ineligible player’s participation. They tied with Cedar and Pine View, but lost 3-2 to red-hot Snow Canyon on Thursday.

With seven games remaining, it will be interesting to see whether or not the Flyers can overcome their slow start.

Elsewhere, Snow Canyon continued its spectacular 2012 season run with a 4-0 ousting over Hurricane. Kali Stewart scored three goals, while Kyleigh Wittwer added one of her own for the impressive win.

“We did a pretty good job,” Snow Canyon coach Kenny Kunde said. “Our movement is much, much better. We were just a tiny bit quicker than Hurricane and made some terrific shots. Kali was where she needed to be. She played a great game.”

The Warriors are now 8-1 overall, and 5-1 against Region 9. Their only loss came to Cedar on Aug. 28.

Next up for Kunde’s team is Pine View, who the Warriors beat 3-0 the last time they met.

“We tend to struggle a little on their field,” Kunde said. “We have to focus and play like we did today.”

Pine View is coming off a Tuesday night draw with Desert Hills on the Panthers home turf. The game finished in a 0-0 tie after two hard-fought rounds of overtime.

The Thunder’s record now stands at 3-1-2, while Pine View is 2-2-2 on the season.
