Local small tech businesses have opportunity to apply for grants, contracts

ST. GEORGE – A representative of the Small Business Innovation Research and Science Technology Transfer Assistance Center will be in St. George on Sept. 7 to explain the assistance available through the SBIR-STTR research and technology program to small technology businesses.

Mary Cardon, manager of USTAR’s SBIR-STTR Assistance Center, will present the basics of the SBIR-STTR program and the Assistance Center in St. George at the Dixie State College Health Sciences auditorium, 1526 Medical Center Drive, Room 156. This event is open to any company with new technology or a new take on existing technology. A free lunch will be provided.

The SBIR-STTR program has been in place for over 30 years providing grant-writing assistance, education opportunities, and over $2.5 billion annually to small technology businesses nationwide. It is designed to fund innovative, high-risk projects with no loss of equity and no payback of the grant or contract funds.

The process of gaining assistance is highly competitive with winning based solely on the company’s ability to meet goals described in specific solicitations as well as bring ideas and products to market. USTAR launched the SBIR-STTR Assistance Center in June 2008. Its purpose is to assure Utah businesses are qualified for the program and to assist in proposal submission.

Before and after the lunch event, Cardon will be available to meet one-on-one with businesses in the area to assess their qualifications for program assistance. These individual meetings will last 45 minutes each, and businesses should come with a white paper or summary explanation about what their business does.
