A team can own every stat category in the book and still lose a game. Dixie State found that out Saturday night in a 17-9 loss at Adams State.
The Red Storm was impressive with Griff Robles at the helm. He passed for 296 yards and helped the team rack up 419 offensive yards altogether. But Dixie State did lose in one category: turnovers. The Red Storm out-gained the Grizzlies by 164 yards, but couldn’t hold on to the football. Robles threw four interceptions and the team fumbled it away twice.
Dixie State’s last four possessions proved to be an amazingly frustrating exercise in futility.
Trailing by eight points and on the move early in the fourth quarter, Robles was picked off for the third time in the game by ASU defensive back Jake Long at the Grizzlies 24-yard line. After forcing an ASU punt, Robles and favorite receiver Zach Fox moved the ball 56 yards down to the Grizzlies 2-yard line. But on fourth and one, Kamuela Alisa was stopped short, giving the ball back to Adams State.
After forcing another ASU punt, Dixie State again began moving the ball. Only this time Robles was stuffed short on a fourth and one with 1:46 left in the game.
The Red Storm had one last chance after Adams State had a bad snap on a punt. Dixie recovered the ball at the Grizzlies 29-yard line with 1:29 to play. Again the Red Storm moved the ball, this time inside the ASU 1-yard line. But on third and one with 24 seconds left, Robles threw his fourth interception of the game, with Devin Simmons stealing the ball away from a Dixie State receiver. Simmons downed the ball and iced the game for Adams State.
Fox had 10 receptions for 108 yards and A.J. Johnson rushed for 63 yards and scored the only touchdown for Dixie State, which plays at home next week against Western Oregon (6 p.m. at Hansen Stadium).
