Wake up fellas, the game has started.
That’s what Dixie High coach Blaine Monkres said he felt like telling his team after Provo started the game by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. As it turns out, the jolting play was just the eye-opener the Flyers needed. One minute later Blake Barney hit Tanner Webster with a 5-yard TD pass that started a 48-point landslide for Dixie and sent the visiting Flyers to their third straight win, 55-14 over the Bulldogs
“We let them take the opening kickoff back, so that wasn’t too good of a start,” Monkres said. “Four or five plays later we scored, so that’s good. I think it kind of woke everybody up.”
Provo, a 4A school, looked tough on film, Monkres said. But the Dixie offense sliced through the Bulldogs defense like a hot knife through butter. The Flyers had 499 yards of offense, and that despite pulling the starters late in the third quarter.
“When we watched them on film, we thought they looked pretty good against Pleasant Grove,” Monkres said. “We thought they were a little better. They turned the ball over to us five times as well, so that helped us a lot.”
After that quick first drive, Dixie just kept rolling. barney found Kyle Hansen from 19 yards out and then ran one in himself. The 2-yard run late in the first quarter made it 21-7 in favor of Dixie.
The second quarter was more of the same. Taylor Berry ran one in from 2-yards out and Drew Batchelor took a jet sweep 12 yards for a score.
Meanwhile, the Dixie defense was plenty good itself, forcing the Provo triple-option into an uncomfortable passing mode. That led to five interceptions.
“We did a pretty good job against their triple option,” Monkres said. “Their fullback broke one or two on us, but we really contained their quarterback well.”
At half, Dixie led 34-7 and the Flyers pushed it to 48-7 on another TD catch by Webster and a score by running back Joseph Takau from 17 yards out.
Provo got a couple of late scores against the Dixie junior varsity to make the score look a little more respectable.
