ST. GEORGE – Paving on Interstate 15 was suspended Tuesday evening, Aug. 21, due to rain and will require a schedule change, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Drivers can expect the following for the rest of this week:

  • Crews will be working from 5 p.m. to noon, Wednesday, Aug. 22 through noon Saturday, Aug. 25.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 22 – crews will work on the northbound off-ramp at Cedar Pocket traffic interchange, requiring closure of the ramp and the northbound right traffic lane during work hours.
  • Thursday, Aug. 23, and Friday, Aug. 24. (overnight to noon Saturday) – crews will shift to southbound I-15, requiring a closure of the left lane during work hours.

The $11.6 million improvement project, which is scheduled for completion in October, includes removal of a layer of the existing pavement and repaving the roadway from the Virgin River Gorge to the Utah State line (mileposts 13-29).

The speed limit through the work zone will be reduced to 45 mph.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. To stay up-to-date with the latest highway conditions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov or call 511.

Individuals seeking to avoid the repaving work in the Virgin River Gorge are advised to take Highway 91 as an alternate route. The highway bypasses the gorge entirely. Southbound travelers will reconnect with I-15 at  Littlefield, Ariz, while northbound travelers will follow the route into Santa Clara and then St. George via Sunset Boulevard.
