Red Cross offers free Disaster Action Team training

ST GEORGE —The American Red Cross in St. George will offer disaster training courses to community members on Aug. 24 and 25. This is the first step in becoming a member of a Disaster Action Team.  These volunteers respond to local disasters in Washington, Kane, Garfield, Beaver and Iron Counties with the option to deploy nationally if they choose.

There is no charge to take this training.  Events like the recent flooding and wildfires in Southern Utah make it important for individuals to be trained and prepared in case of emergency.  Class size is limited.

As of Saturday, Aug. 18, Randy Hiller, a spokesman for the Red Cross in Southern Utah, said there were still 10 spots open for training. Though he suggested individuals also go to the Utah Red Cross website and sign up to become a volunteer. “It makes things a little easier,” he said.

As for people taking advantage of the offered training, Hiller said the Red Cross was “receiving a good response” so far.

The first night of the class mainly details what the Red Cross is and how it works, Hiller said. The second day is where the main bulk of training will take place.
