IRON COUNTY – The National Weather Service has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for central Iron County, specifically Cedar City and Interstate 15 between Cedar City and Parowan until 7:45 p.m.

* At 5:41 p.m. NWS Doppler radar indicated a strong thunderstorm is producing very heavy rain over this area.

* Radar estimates of 1.5 to 2.0 inches of water has fallen along I-15 north of Cedar City between 4:45 and 5:45 p.m. and the Cedar City metro area has received .50 to .75 inches in the last 20 minutes of that time span. An additional .50-.75 inches of rain can be expected in Cedar city over the hour through 6:45 p.m.

* Rainfall rates this intense are expected to create ponding of water on area roadways and may overwhelm drainage systems.

Precautionary/preparedness actions:

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into Areas where the water covers the roadway. Floodwaters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.

When encountering flooded Roads make the smart choice: Turn around don’t drown.

STGnews reminder: Cruise control in the rain and you may hydroplane. Turn it off.

Be aware and safe all of you!

Editorials on Chick-Fil-A, which can’t be found anywhere near here got way more press than this flooding from this paper. Even St. George high school football got lots more press. This is a real issue locally, but this paper is proving to be more or less useless in even covering basic local topics that affect people living here.
