LA VERKIN – Sometime around 7 p.m. this evening an active search and rescue operation was initiated in search of a 2-year-old girl gone missing in the area of La Verkin Creek, around 970 N. State Street, east of state Route 17.

Family members and citizens of the community responded to assist in the search of areas surrounding the family property, including a pond. Many carried flashlights. Washington County Sheriff and other emergency and law enforcement responders were on scene and in charge of the effort.

An extended relative of the family told St. George News around 10:30 p.m. that the body of the girl had been found under the SR-17 bridge.

Our further report on this matter is deferred, including names, pending response from authorities on the matter.

The St. George News team grieves with this family.

I have a 3 year old and i worry every day that something might happen to him. I watch over them like a hawk because of situations like this. It truly breaks my heart to hear of such a tragedy upon such an innocent child. I pray for those who grieve this difficult time.

Sad thing is that for 2 and a half hrs. 50-70 law enforcement, fireman, medical staff were all standing on top of that bridge where the girl was finally found right under their feet by a citizen. Thank you for your hard work and search efforts law and fireman.

I was involved in the search myself as a citizen. I don’t know for sure but I don’t think that there were 50-70 fire man and law enforcement, most were citizens in the community. There was not a single person standing around, all we’re actively searching for this little girl. The water evils were high and it was dark, the water had to down before they could find her. The father of this child is a firman himself, they were not standing around, they were searching for a brother’s precious little girl. Even they wete able to find her sooner it ould not have changed anything, she was deceased before the authorities had even been called How dare you sit in your arm chair and critisze those that risk their lives to save our lives.
