IRON COUNTY – Fire crews made progress against the Baboon Fire thanks to scattered rainfall throughout Friday night and Saturday morning. The 19,000-acre fire is currently 60 percent contained.

According to the latest progress report from Don Carpenter, the Baboon Fire information officer, fire crews continue to secure the fire line and are beginning mop-up and rehabilitation of hand and dozer lines. Ybright’s Color Country Interagency Type III Team is in command of firefighting efforts.

Though over half of the fire has been contained, Carpenter said the Baboon Repeater site, power lines, and a natural gas line remain threatened. However, no evacuations are in effect, and no injuries have been reported.

A total of 220 personnel are currently assigned to the fire.

Located four miles south of Minersville, the Baboon Fire was sparked by a lightning strike Thursday afternoon.
