ST. GEORGE – Rock and Roll radio stations are usually the first to cheer for fireworks, but this year one station is saying “Don’t do it!”
With many Utahns forgoing the traditional driveway celebrations this Fourth of July due to fire dangers or restrictions put in place by cities and towns across the state, one Southern Utah radio station is buying back fireworks with movie tickets.
KZHK 95.9 FM The Hawk will give 50 cents on the dollar in “movie bucks” for fireworks.
Jon Smith, KZHK’s program director, said he hopes to discourage people from using fireworks on their own until the fire danger subsides. “I think with the fires we’ve seen already this year we need to say ‘hey, let’s be smart and go see a movie instead of burning our state down,’” he said.
People who want to take advantage of the offer are asked to take their fireworks to KZHK 95.9 The Hawk’s studios from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 3. The station is located at 204 N. Playa Della Rosita, in Washington City. Fireworks will be exchanged for 50 cents on the dollar in movie tickets.
KONY 99.9 FM will be broadcasting a 21-minute marriage of music and patriotic narration to accompany the fully choreographed live City of St. George’s Fireworks Celebration which will fill three corners of the St. George sky, beginning at 10 p.m. on the Fourth.
Laame. Why go see a movie when you can watch the city’s fireworks display?
Since when is it lame to be a responsible citizen?They aren’t saying watch a movie instead of the city fireworks. They are saying don’t use your own fireworks because of the extreme fire danger.There is ALWAYS at least one idiot who will use them in an area which with one tiny spark could ignite into a raging inferno. So they are saying we will buy your fireworks from you and give you fifty cents on the dollar towards movie tickets so you can sit inside a building away from anything you could start a fire with.
I traded in $200 worth for $100 in movie money. I can use that any time I want. We will still watch the city’s planned show. We just wont catch the neighborhood on fire this year!

The movie “bucks” can be used at any time. They are not for just the 4th of July evening only. Duh!
This is disgusting and reminds me of efforts to sterilize people by offering them pitiful sums of money. It’s very condescending of the radio station. I may just intentionally start a fire with my fireworks to protest this.
You might want to think twice before saying things like that. What if someone starts a fire and burns down your house? Or you accidently start a fire and destroy your house?And the person being condescending is not the radio station. I agree with you that they are attempting to sterilize something,its called a lack of common sense.
I would love it if someone burned down my house as I have it insured for substantially more than what it’s worth.
