Top Region 9 softball teams head to state tournament

ST. GEORGE – The top four teams in Region 9 softball qualified for the state tournament that starts this Saturday. The state softball tournament is a double elimination tournament.

Cedar City dominated the softball scene this year. Canyon View and Cedar finished tied for first place, and finished region play with a record of 10-2. Cedar won the tiebreaker and is the No. 1 seed. The three seed in Region 9 went to Pine View who finished with a 7-5 record. And the fourth and final seed went to Snow Canyon who ended the season 6-6.

Cedar will host a four-team pod on Saturday. Cedar will play Union at noon, while Juab will take on Tooele at 10 a.m. The two losing teams will meet at 2 p.m. in an elimination game. The winners won’t play again until Thursday, May 17. Union finished the season with a 3-7 record and is the four seed out of Region 10. Tooele is the second seed in the pod coming from Region 11 and finishing the season with a 9-3 record. Juab went 5-5 on the year and is the third seed out of Region 12.

Canyon View is the two seed and is in the Bear River pod. Canyon View will play Uintah at noon while host Bear River takes on North Sanpete at 10 a.m. The two losing teams will meet at 2 p.m. in an elimination game. The winners won’t play again until Thursday, May 17. Uintah is the three seed coming out of Region 10 with an 8-2 record. The top seed,Bear River, comes out of Region 11 going 11-1 on the year. North Sanpete ended the regular season with a 4-6 record in Region 12 and is the fourth seed in the pod.

Pine View is in the Spanish Fork pod. Pine View will take on Juan Diego in the early game at 10 a.m. while top seed Spanish Fork hosts Stansbury at noon. The two losing teams will meet at 2 p.m. in an elimination game. The winners won’t play again until Thursday, May 17. Juan Diego is the two seed out of Region 10 ending the regular season with an 8-2 mark that was tied for first with two other teams. Spanish Fork is the top seed out of Region 12, finishing the year with a perfect 10-0 record. The fourth seed in the pod, Stansbury, finished the year 7-5 in Region 11.

Snow Canyon took the fourth and final Region 9 playoff spot and is the Wasatch pod. Snow Canyon will take on Wasatch, the top seed out of Region 10. Wasatch went 8-2 on the season finishing in a three-way tie for first. Snow Canyon and Wasatch play at 10 a.m. while the other two teams in the pod, Grantsville vs. Payson play at noon. The two losing teams will meet at 2 p.m. in an elimination game. The winners won’t play again until Thursday May 17. Payson is the two seed in the pod out of Region 12, finishing with a 6-4 record while Grantsville went 8-4 on the year out of Region 11 and earning the three seed in the pod.
