UPDATED 3:04 p.m. clarifications to story first dictated not read.

ST. GEORGE – A St. George man telephoned police dispatch this morning and advised them he had shot an intruder in his home.

Capt. Kyle Whitehead of the St. George Police Department said that the call came in a little before 9 a.m. Thursday, and officers were dispatched to the Puerta Del Sol apartments, 1366 W. Indian Hills Drive.

The alleged intruder had fled the scene and the police were given a description of the vehicle. A police alert to look for the vehicle was initiated.

Whitehead said officers reporting to the scene of the shooting interviewed the man involved. Evidence of a shooting was discovered, including blood at the scene, and the man’s story was consistent with the original report made to dispatch.

Josh Dalton, a neighboring resident in the Puerta Del Sol apartments, said he walked by the home, where the shooting occurred, between 2 and 2:30 a.m.

“All I know is the house that got broken into was having a party last night,” said Dalton, “and it was rowdy and craziness.”

Dalton said he heard gunshots during that party in the early morning hours, that he thought they were firecrackers at first. He said he did not think they were the gunshots that were specific to the morning intruder incident and that he did talk with a detective present during the morning investigation.

Sometime prior to noon, the police received a call from a hospital in Cedar City, advising that an individual with a gunshot wound had been dropped off for treatment by some other parties.

The investigation is ongoing, Whitehead said, and no arrests have been made. Additional details will be reported as received.
