Tillers in the Field featured at next DSC President’s Colleagues meeting

ST. GEORGE – Dixie State College of Utah will host its seventh President’s Colleagues of DSC meeting of the 2011-12 academic year on Monday, April 2, beginning at 12 p.m., in Room 156 of the DSC Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on the Dixie Regional Medical Center’s River Road campus at 1526 Medical Center Drive. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The April meeting will provide an update on a current research project, entitled “Tillers in the Field,” conducted at the DSC Val A. Browning Archive under the direction of former DSC President Dr. Douglas D. Alder, which focuses on life in Southern Utah during the first half of the 20th century. “Tillers in the Field” is based on 400 interviews of people who lived in Utah’s Dixie during that historical era.

The presentation will spotlight descendents of four of those individuals interviewed as part of the project, including Colleague members Vard Hall and Dixon Paul, along with Ed Bowler and DSC associate professor of physics Steven Sullivan. The speakers will discuss what they discovered in studying the interviews, including everyday life and work during that time period.

The President’s Colleagues of Dixie State College, founded nearly 20 years ago by Dr. Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the St. George and Washington County area. Dr. Alder, who also started an Honors Program at DSC, organized the Colleagues as a way to increase academic activities on campus.

The Colleagues meet together once a month during the academic year to hear presentations from each other and/or invited guests. The final Colleagues meeting for the 2011-12 academic year is scheduled for Monday, May 7.
