ST. GEORGE – The Color Country Interagency Fire Managers announced plans on Friday to ignite several prescribed burns in southwestern Utah and the Arizona Strip during 2012. The burns will be managed by various federal and state agencies including the Bureau of Land Management, the US Forest Service, the National Park Service and the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

These controlled burns are management-ignited fires used to clear the ground of dangerous fuels such as dead wood and brush. Such low-intensity burns revitalize range and forest lands and decrease the risks from wildfire to life and property.

The prescribed burns are planned, but will only occur if the weather conditions are favorable and adequate resources are available to control the fire.
