SUU coach is released, DSC coach leads as replacement pick

CEDAR CITY – Southern Utah University men’s basketball coach, Roger Reid, told his team thursday morning that he will not return next season.

Reid led SUU to a 14-17 record this season. Reid finishes 54-97 overall over five seasons at SUU. Reid also coached at Brigham Young University and Snow College.

Reid wanted to remain coach when the team moved to the Big Sky Conference next year but was told the school was not extending his contract.

SUU lost in the semi finals of the Summit League tournament on Monday to end their season.

Dixie State College men’s basketball coach, Jon Judkins, is the name on everyone’s mind right now to take the SUU job. Judkins went to Utah State and has a great record at DSC. Judkins is 123-74 at DSC and looks to improve that record today against Seattle Pacific in the first round of the NCAA II tournament.

Another name to throw in the hat would be SUU graduate Russell Beck. He is currently the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College and his squad is 24-6 and hosting the Region 9 tournament this weekend as the #1 seed. He is a program builder. SUU needs a young energetic coach that can bring in good players and build a program. Beck was a part of Bill Evans staff when they went 16-14. Beck also helped SLCC to the NJCAA National Championship game as an assistant to Norm Parrish and worked for Steve Gosar at CSI and Jeff Kidder and John Judkins at Dixie State.

The assistant, Ron Carling, should not be overlooked. What a sustained coaching record he has had!!!

Best man for the job would be Barret Peery. He is currently the head coach at Indian Hills Community
college in Iowa. He played at SUU. He has been a head coach at CSI and an Assistant coach at The University of Utah and many other places. He’s young and a very good recruiter.
