Exploration of water on the Moon discussed next DSC President’s Colleagues meeting

ST. GEORGE – Search for water on the moon at Dixie State College’s next President’s Colleagues of DSC meeting on Monday, March 5.

Dr. Andrew Christensen will be a presentation on NASA’s exploration of water on the moon the sixth President’s Colleagues of DSC meeting for the 2011-12 academic year. The meeting will begin at 12 p.m., in Room 156 of the DSC Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on the Dixie Regional Medical Center’s River Road campus at 1526 Medical Center Drive. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Christensen received a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1962, and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Denver in 1969. His entire career has dealt with space science, having been associated with NASA and the National Science Foundation. Christensen was on the sub-committee for preparation of the Heliophysics Science and Moon planning document. In the early 1980s, he served as the National Science Foundation’s Aeronomy Program Director.

As an employee of the Aerospace Corporation from 1979 to 2000, Christensen served as the director of the Space Science Applications Laboratory. He helped the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Europeans on a joint weather satellite program, and he was key to the design of the NASA/LCROSS mission, which was launched in June of 2009 with a lunar space orbiter.

The President’s Colleagues of Dixie State College, founded nearly 20 years ago by former DSC President Dr. Douglas Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the St. George and Washington County area. Dr. Alder, who also started an Honors Program at DSC, organized the Colleagues as a way to increase academic activities on campus.

The Colleagues meet together once a month during the academic year to hear presentations from each other and/or invited guests.

The next Colleagues meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 2, 2012.
