ST. GEORGE – Children are warned from the time they can walk not to chase a ball when it rolls into the street. Commonplace admonitions do not arise from nowhere, the associated dangers that arise when children, balls and cars converge is real.

Last night, Feb. 23, on Sunset Blvd. in St. George, just such an incident occurred. St. George Police responded to report of the incident at 9:20 p.m.

Lt. Joe Hartman said that a family was crossing Sunset Boulevard at the intersection of 1400 West.  “Some of the family were on the south side, some (including the mother) were on the north.”

“Apparently, their [five-year-old] little boy went to cross the street, had a ball or something in his hand, somehow lost control of the ball and ran into the roadway,” Hartman said. The boy “was struck by a vehicle that was traveling on the roadway – it’s like he ran into it almost – and got run over by the right rear tire.”

Medical responders transported the boy to the hospital with a bone sticking out of his leg.  Hartman said that he suffered a compound fracture, the injuries were not life threatening and he stayed alert and awake the whole time.

Police were able to provide information on the boy’s current status as we go to publication and they are still finalizing their report.

Glad to hear he’ll be ok, but it’s too bad his parents chose to cross 5 lanes of traffic at 1400 W instead of going a half block down to the crosswalk at Westridge Dr.

Agree with Mike…It worries me to death when I see people walking and riding bikes along Sunset. I am so glad this little guy survived.
