CEDAR CITY – The Cedar Redmen used a 12-4 overtime period to beat the Desert Hills Thunder 65-57 on Friday night. The win has put the Redmen and Thunder in a tie for first place in region 9.

The Redmen used a 16-9 first quarter to jump to an early lead and led by six going into the forth quarter.

There is a reason the Thunder have been the No. 1 team in the state all season,  and they showed why in the forth quarter and they fought back and tied the game at 53 after a 3-point basket by Jaden Beckstrand.

The Redmen had two chances to win the game in regulation, but could not finish and the game went into overtime.

The Redmen dominated the extra period and the win. The Region’s leading scorer, Kyler Nielson,  had another big game and scored 26 points. Redmen guard John Urusa added 18 points.

The Thunder only got nine points from division one-bound Tyler Ott. Brandon Simister led the Thunder with 19 points and Beckstrand added 12.

The Thunder will look to bounce back on Wednesday night against the Canyon View Falcons.

The Redmen hope to continue their winning play on Wednesday night against the Dixie Flyers at 7 p.m. in Cedar.
