St. George Police announce 17th session of Citizens Academy

ST. GEORGE – The St. George Police Department announces the 17th session of its Citizens Academy with the theme of working to build a stronger community

Law enforcement agencies around the country are adopting a new philosophy to deal with crime in their communities called the Community Oriented Policing. COP encourages law enforcement agencies and community residents to actively work together in addressing public safety issues.

The St. George Police Department has adopted the Community Oriented Policing philosophy and is pleased to offer the St. George community a program designed to provide an in-depth look at the functions of our department. That program is the Citizens Academy.

“The Citizens Academy consists of a series of classroom sessions and demonstrations designed to introduce each participant to the abilities we have and limitations we face as a police department,” said Capt. James Van Fleet of the St. George Police Department.

By offering the opportunity for citizens to become more directly involved with their local agency, both groups are able to contribute on a larger scale in enhancing the quality of life in the community. COP efforts have played an important role in reducing crime in any community.

“The goal of the Citizens Academy is to foster a better relationship between the citizens of the St. George community and the police department,” Capt. Van Fleet said. “Our hopes are that by achieving this, we will be able to improve communication, obtain citizen input and support, and encourage more meaningful involvement on both parts.”

The 17th Session of the St. George Police Department Citizens Academy will be held at the St. George Police Department’s training room from Feb. 21 to April 17, each Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Potential candidates must be able to the commit to the class times, be a minimum age of 18-years-old (unless approved by Chief of Police) and have no criminal record. Applications can be picked up at the St. George Police Department front office or at the City of St. George website can download the application.
