Winter on the Rocks off-road event seeks to build public lands awareness

ST. GEORGE – The Winter on the Rocks off-road event brings off-roaders together and builds awareness of at-risk wilderness trails.

Now in its third year, Winter on the Rocks draws hundreds of off-road enthusiasts from Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, California and other states to the trails of Washington County.

“It’s for a good cause as well as a good time,” said Kelly Jensen, marketing director for the Utah 4×4 Club.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Utah Shared Access Alliance, Take Back Utah, and the Blueribbon Coalition. Each of these nonprofit organizations advocates responsible use of recreational land by the public and helps fight closure of these areas.

“The purpose of our event is to promote open public lands,” Jensen said. “We are in a constant fight to keep thousands of trails from being closed and deemed wilderness for only a few to use.”

Participants in Winter on the Rocks 2012 will gather at the Washington County Fairgrounds on Jan. 27 and 28. The twelve scenic trails featured during the event are south of Sand Hollow State Park and east of Washington Fields and range from the tame Milt’s Mile to the challenging Nasty Half.

Both novice and experienced drivers with rigs of any type are encouraged to attend.

Wish I could be there to see this event. It should be exciting!

It doesn’t seem to me that wilderness was made to be gouged, scarred, and trashed by monster motor vehicles. Yes, I know the argument that OHVs allow the elderly and disabled to appreciate the beauty of the landscape, but I have yet to see any of those folks out there. So far, every time I’ve had to dive off a trail and choke for oxygen among the dust, it has been some young, hot-dogging dude at the wheel. Just saying.

    Ron:
    Your perceptions are so misguided.
Friday Morning there was a gentelman with no legs in a wheelchair attend our event.
Not only did he drive his own jeep on the trail he also pdrove a big rv with a trailor to the fair grounds.
You have a bad idea of who we are and what we do because of a group that blasts us with negative false information. Second thing is We were in open access BLM land we didnt drive on any “Wilderness”.
We cleaned up after others and stayed on our trails.
Just another Reason why you dont judge a book by its cover.
Why dont you come out one weekend and see what its truly about?
    Kelly
