ReStore saves 500,000 pounds from the landfill

Habitat for Humanity Restore

Since opening six months ago, Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore recycling centers have diverted more than 587,000 pounds of materials otherwise destined for the landfill.

The ReStore has two recycling centers. One for glass, paper, plastic, and aluminum cans.  The other is for cell phones, rechargeable and alkaline batteries, and toner cartridges. In addition, the ReStore accepts appliances, electronics, and is a clothing collection site for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Utah.

ReStore Manager Tracy Sahleen said: “We work with local businesses and homeowners to save wonderful items from the landfill. Things that are no longer loved by one person are treasured by another.”

Sahleen indicated that the ReStore used local businesses for its recycling needs, including e-waste which is handled by Virgin Valley Recycling. Further, the ReStore enjoys a relationship with National Park Service and obtains a number of reusable items from Zion National Park.

Proceeds from the ReStore support Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah in providing decent, affordable housing for low-income families in Washington County.

Additionally, some of the proceeds fund the organization’s A Brush with Kindness program which provides minor exterior home repairs for homeowners who meet income guidelines, and do not have the ability or resources to make the repairs themselves.

Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore, a home improvement thrift store, is located at 267 East 1400 South, in St George.

Perks Espresso & Smoothies will host a donation drop off for Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah’s ReStore on Jan. 28, from noon to 4:00 p.m., at their 1515 W Sunset Blvd. location in St George.

Items accepted include: doors, windows, tile, appliances, furniture, lighting, building materials, and other home improvement items. Virgin Valley Recycling will also be on-site to accept electronics donations.
