Local educator honored as Utah Assistant Principal of the Year

SALT LAKE CITY – Pine View Middle School assistant principal was honored as the Assistant Principal of the Year by the Utah Association of Secondary School Principals.

Assistant Principal Dana McConnell was named as the Assistant Principal of the Year by the UASSP on Wednesday. The award was presented to McConnell by Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction Larry K. Shumway and UASSP President Ryck Astle.

Pine View Principal Mike Stephens said McConnell was fully deserving of the award.

“Dana is a person of integrity and she will not quit till the work is done,” Stephens said. “She is a gentle giant who loves students and expects nothing but the best from each and every one of them.”

Tyler May, an area agent for the educator-centric Horace Mann Insurance Company, added his graduations for McConnell.

“She is very pleasant and very professional,” May said. “She’s always concerned about being involved with the students and always keeps their interests in mind.”

McConnell began her career teaching and coaching in the Nebo School District in 1991 before becoming an assistant principal in the Washington School District in 2007. She has served as assistant principal at Pine View Middle School in St. George since 2010.

The UASSP also named Juab High School Principal Rick Robbins as Utah High School Principal of the Year, and Mapleton Junior High Principal Suzanne Kimball as Utah Middle School Principal of the Year.

McConnell, Robbins and Kimball will represent Utah in the national secondary school completions.
