HURRICANE – The Hurricane Tigers (6-2) come into Region 9 play on a six game winning streak and will host the Dixie Flyers (0-1, 4-6) tonight at 7 p.m. at Hurricane High School.
The Tigers may be the hottest team in Region 9. The Tigers lost their first two games of the season under first year coach Brian Viafanua, but since then the Tigers have run of six straight wins including an 11 point win over then ranked no. 12 team in the state Lehi.
The Tigers are led 6 foot 9 inch Boston Gubler and 6 foot 7 in Colton Marshall. Gubler and Marshall are no. 1 and no. 2 respectively in the Region in rebounding with Gubler grabbing 12 rebounds-per-game and Marsshall bringing down 9.25 rebounds per game. They also get it done on the offensive end and both are in the top five in scoring, Marshall pours in 16.88 points-per-game and Gubler adds 13.63 points-per-game.
The Dixie Flyers come in on a four game losing streak, losing six of their last seven games after winning their first three. The major problem for the Flyers is injuries. During football season the Flyers lost Tadd Challis when he went down with his knee injury against Pine View. Then, in the Flyers first loss of the season, Walker Swenson and Kyle Hansen were seriously injured. Swenson was in the hospital for a few weeks and in now expected to make an eventual comeback. Challis and Hansen are out for the season. Swenson was scoring over 12 points-per-game and grabbing over nine rebounds per game before he went down with the injury.
In the absence of the three downed Flyers, guards Devin Bennett and Deshon Brown have stepped up, scoring 12.4 and 10.10 points-per-game respectively. Bennett is second in the Region in three-pointers made and scored 22 points in their last game.
Victory in the upcoming game will depend upon whether or not the Flyers can contain the Tigers big men and get them in foul trouble. It’s no secret the one thing holding the Tigers back is their depth.
