ST. GEORGE – As part of its continued support of the 99.9 FM KONY Country’s Coins for Kids radio campaign, Dixie State College students, faculty and staff came together to help provide Christmas cheer to families in need in St. George and Washington County.

This year the Dixie State family combined to purchase or donate nearly 400 gifts, including toys, coats and jackets, shoes, clothing, diapers and other necessities for boys and girls from six-months-old to 12 years of age, through DSC’s Gift of Dixie Christmas Tree and Dance activities. According to DSC Student Association service chairperson Kahryn Harris, a sophomore dental hygiene major from Highland, Utah, this year’s Gift of Dixie drive is the largest in school history as DSC students, faculty and staff plucked stars, each bearing a child’s age and gift need, off the tree to fulfill the gift request.

“To me, this is the best part of the Christmas season,” said Donna Stafford, DSC Director of Student Activities. “It is heartwarming to see our entire campus family come together to help provide a Christmas to children throughout our community.”

Stafford also paid tribute to seventh-grade students from Lorie Swaydan and Shannon Lea’s classes at Sunrise Ridge Intermediate School, who combined to raise $1,000 as part of the Gift of Dixie effort. Those students used the monies raised to go on a major gift shopping spree and those gifts were then delivered to DSC to be placed under the DSCSA Christmas tree. DSC students also raised funds through their annual Gift of Dixie Dance held this past Dec. 2, which were used by DSC students, faculty and staff to purchase gifts.

“Lorie and Shannon and their students been involved in this effort for a number of years and we appreciate all of their support,” Stafford added. “It is really inspiring to see these young students willing to work together to make the lives of kids not too much younger than they are a little brighter during the holidays. This entire effort truly exemplifies the Christmas and Dixie Spirit.”

All the gifts received by DSCSA were taken to the Dixie Center on Wednesday afternoon to be wrapped by volunteers in time for Christmas delivery throughout the county. For more information, please contact DSC Director of Student Activities Donna Stafford at 435-652-7513.
