WASHINGTON CITY – At approximately 4 a.m. today Washington City Fire Department responded to a report of two vehicle fires in the residential neighborhood of 300 N and 100 E.

“We had two fires at the same location, two vehicles were involved, two separate fires,” said Fire Chief Jim Guynn.

He said they were able to make contact with the owners of the vehicles and did not find them to be responsible for the fires.

“We did determine that [the fires] were intentionally set,” said Guynn.

Captain Coty Chadburn of St. George Fire Department had noted the possible link between the Washington City vehicle fires and the St. George vehicle fire to which his crew responded at 4:30 this morning.  Chadburn said his information on the Washington City car fires included that gasoline had been poured on those; “I can’t confirm that gasoline was poured,” said Guynn. “We’ll have to have evidence sent up to the crime lab,” for further investigation. Guynn agreed with Chadburn that the coincidence of the incidents cannot be ignored and needs to be investigated. He said there was another vehicle fire in Middleton a couple nights ago.

Whether or not all of these fires are part of a related crime spree will be determined as the respective fire departments pursue their investigations.
