Thunder blow past Miners in first round

ST. GEORGE – The Desert Hills Thunder knocked out the Park City Miners 4-14 in the first round of the 3A state tournament.

The Thunder had many players that were being called questionable or out, but they played and played big. Thunder wide receiver Ty Rutledge came up huge with four receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Needham is not quite back to 100 percent; he did run for 72 yards but did not find the endzone.

The Thunder jumped out to a quick start scoring the first two touchdowns and taking a 14-0 lead. The Miners made a good comeback bfore the half, scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter. The Thunder led at the half, 17-14.

The second half was all Thunder out scoring the Miners 17-0 in the second half.

The Thunder got an outstanding game from quarterback Porter Harris. Harris threw for 148 yards and three touchdowns. Harris also ran for 55 yards on the night.

The Thunder advance to take on Stansbury next week up north at Stansbury. Stansbury beat Juab 48-21 Friday night.
