ST. GEORGE – The St. George Motocross track officially opened to riders on Saturday.

Located southwest of the St. George Airport, the new motocross track opened its gates to the public for the first time as riders christened the facility over a weekend of practice laps. The event attracted over 300 motocross riders and numerous spectators.

“It was a great turnout for us,” said Michan Palmer, one of the track’s general managers.

Palmer added there had been an overwhelming excitement over the fact the new track was local. Until it was built, motocross enthusiasts would have to go to places like Cedar City or Mesquite to ride. Now there is a track just outside of St. George.

Aside from being a local, Palmer said that an inspiration for building the racing facility was because she and her husband, Judd Palmer, were avid motocross riders. Their love of the sport was inherited by their children who rode on a homemade motocross track of their own.

“It’s a great sport, it’s a family sport,” Palmer said.

“Lots of love went into the track,” Track Manager Jewelee Humphries said. “It’s a first-class, beautiful facility.”

Palmer noted that a wakeboard park was possibly being built near the motocross track, along with what looked like an RV site. She predicted that the area around the track could one day become the X-games center of St. George.

The St. George Motocross Track will be hosting its first race on Oct. 22. Palmer said that there are plans to have one race a month.

There is a $25 fee for riders who want to use the track for practice. Spectators can watch the practice runs for free. Pricing for upcoming races will vary from event to event.

Track hours are 3 p.m. to dusk on Tuesdays and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
