ST. GEORGE – A young man on a motorcycle was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center earlier today after heading southbound on River Road, proceeded legally through a yellow light and being broadsided by a vehicle driven by an older man making a U-Turn.
Sgt. Craig Harding of the St. George Police Department said that the motorcyclist “suffered cuts, bruises and abrasions – road rash.”
“I don’t know if [the motorcyclist] was wearing a helmet,” said Harding. “When I got there he was being taken away in an ambulance. He was wearing shorts, no gloves, was wearing tennis shoes; that helps produce injuries even though it was not his fault.”
The motorcycle could not be driven after the accident, the forks (which Harding explained are the two pieces of metal that go from the handlebars to the wheel to steer the cycle) were bent and broken.
Harding said that neither speed nor road conditions appear to be a factor in the accident.
“The fact that the guy in the car did not see the motorcyclist ‘is’ the factor,” he said.
Harding said the driver of the vehicle was given a citation for an unsafe U-turn.
