ZION NATIONAL PARK – Zion National Park will join nearly 10,000 other law enforcement agencies throughout the country to support Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, an intensive law enforcement campaign designed to combat impaired driving from August 19 to September 5.

Impaired driving is a serious problem. In 2009, 10,839 people died in crashes involving drivers who were at or above the legal limit, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “All too often, innocent people suffer tragic consequences from impaired drivers. Zion National Park is committed to protecting park visitors by intensifying our law enforcement efforts. With twice as many alcohol-impaired accidents occurring over weekends and four times as many accidents occurring at night, we will be particularly vigilant during these times,” said Zion National Park Superintendent Jock Whitworth.

Violators can face jail time, lose their driver’s licenses, or be required to use ignition interlock devices. Financial impacts resulting from a violation include increased insurance rates, attorney fees, court costs, lost time from work, and potential job loss.

“Our message is simple and unwavering – if you are found driving while under the influence, you will be arrested. No exceptions,” said Whitworth.
