ST. GEORGE –A Hurricane High School student received statewide recognition when he was honored as Athlete-of-the-Month by Utah Youth Soccer Association’s official sports medicine and sports training provider.
Landon Fisher, 17, who was named The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital’s July 2011 Athlete-of- the-Month, is not new to recognition.
Fisher’s list of awards includes being selected by the Hurricane High School Soccer Team as the Offensive Player of the Year in 2010, and being named by the Utah High School Activities Association, to both 1st Team All-Region and Honorable Mention All-State. Yet, when he heard about being honored as the TOSH Athlete-of-the-Month he felt, “humbled, excited, and a little surprised to be chosen for something like this.”
Fisher also plays basketball, tennis and golf at Hurricane High, but soccer is not only his favorite sport; it’s “a big part of who I am and if it got taken away from me, there would be a huge, empty hole … I love soccer because it has so many parallels to life, learning how to work as a team, being dependable, hard work, learning to do things even when you don’t want to, having character both on and off the field … I like how there are no set plays.” It “leaves plenty of room for creativity and imagination,” he said.
Fisher has played on the varsity team at Hurricane High since his freshman year. He has also played on competitive club teams and currently plays for the Southern Utah club team Fire Futbol Club Premiere.
FFC Premiere Coach Travis Wilkinson described Fisher as having a “great attitude and tremendous work ethic, which even motivates his teammates to elevate their game.”
Of Fisher, his mother Jenni said, “Landon is a gentleman both on and off the field and has never done anything to disgrace his team or coach. He holds his head high when he makes a mistake and doesn’t get down on himself or the team.”
She also told St. George News that Fisher, “has played soccer since he was four years old … has been playing year-round for six years,” and hopes to play soccer in college and eventually become an orthodontist.
