LA VERKIN – The La Verkin City Council met yesterday evening to discuss a new sidewalk that will be built along SR-9 in cooperation with the Utah Department of Transportation.
For the third year in a row, La Verkin received a grant to build the sidewalk that will be used to assist children in safely walking to school. The city asked to build another 400 feet of sidewalk and was granted enough funds to build 500 feet. The city has one year to complete the project.
Police Chief Lloyd Watkins gave a brief update, telling the City Council that the 4th of July was quiet with just one small fire and few complaints of fireworks.
Watkins said the city received 66 applications for the animal control position, and they currently in the final stages of the interview process.
City Councilman Doug Beecher said he met with the Beautification Committee and they are in the process of discussing a new ball field by Riverwood. He said they are just in the discussion stage and need to see if they can gather enough donations to begin planning the project.
Mayor Karl Wilson said the City Council plans to discuss the bussing concerns at the next meeting. The city is currently paying $600 a month for nine months out of the year to the Washington County School District to bus students to Hurricane.

Actually your numbers are just slightly off. LAST year La Verkin was granted 400′ of sidewalk and they were able to stretch the money to do 500′. THIS coming year La Verkin has been granted the same amount of money but it will only cover the cost of 300′ of sidewalk. That will leave us approx 30′ short of the bridge on the west side of SR-9, but Derek Imlay (Director of Operations) is hoping he can stretch the funds again. But with costs going up, who knows if he can.
