WASHINGTON COUNTY – Two Ironman contenders were injured Saturday when they were hit by vehicles while competing in the bike portion of the triathlon.
Detective Nate Abbott said a biker was hit near Veyo at the Sand Cove turnoff north of Dammeron Valley when an elderly female driver hit him from behind. Abbott said State Route 18 had been divided into three lanes so the bikers had their own travel lane. He said the driver of the vehicle was traveling in the bike lane when she hit the athlete. The man was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries.
Another biker was hit at the Snow Canyon turnoff when a 17-year-old female was driving her vehicle in the bike lane. Abbott said she was trying to exit the bike lane when she turned in front of the biker who then hit her vehicle head on. He was also transported to DRMC.
Abbott said both incidents are currently under investigation.
