GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Dixie State baseball came back from two runs down to beat Mesa State College 5-4 in the opener of a doubleheader before being outmatched in the nightcap 10-3.
The non-conference split from Suplizio Field moved the Red Storm to 28-14 on the year. Mesa State sits at 24-16.
Down 4-2 entering the top of the ninth, DSC put two runners aboard with a Justin Jensen single and a Nick Urban double. Joe Andrade reached on an error in the outfield, scoring pinch runner Quinn Boyer and Urban to tie the game. Trevor Goff singled with two outs to bring in Andrade with the go-ahead run.
Daniel Zapata walked one batter in the ninth, but notched his eighth save holding the Mavericks scoreless. Kyle DiMartino allowed one hit in 1.2 innings for the relief victory.
Tyson Littlewood added to his team lead with a solo home run (8) in the first inning.
In the nightcap, Mesa State struck for seven runs in the second inning and never looked back. DSC starter James Mahler was roughed up – seven runs on four hits over 1.1 innings (L, 6-4).
Ammon Zitting tallied the only multi-hit game in the losing effort.
The Red Storm return to Bruce Hurst Field beginning Friday at 4 p.m. against Arizona Christian University.
