Operation Southern Tempest Nets 14 Gang Members in St. George

ST. GEORGE – St. George gang detectives arrested several illegal immigrants last week in part of a statewide operation called Southern Tempest.

Lt. Dave Moss said the gang unit has been working in conjunction with ICE, and over the last few months have arrested 14 gang members who were in the country illegally.

Moss said as part of the operation, his detectives had gathered intelligence to see if any local gang members had ties to Mexican drug cartels.

“They didn’t,” he said, “but we made a lot of drug arrests.”

Last week, the gang unit held an interdiction where they made several drug arrests, many that were not gang related. One arrest made last week was actually part of a human trafficking investigation.

Moss said several gang members that were in the country legally were also arrested on drug and other various charges.

ICE authorities confirmed 104 gang members were arrested statewide as part of the operation.
