Jail Officials: No Suspicious Activity In Inmate’s Death

Washington County Utah Sheriff

WASHINGTON COUNTY – An investigation into the death of an inmate at Purgatory Correctional Facility yesterday evening is pending an autopsy and toxicology reports, however authorities say they have found no indication of suspicious activity.

Wilbur Moroni Jake, 42, of Cedar City was found in his bed unresponsive around 5:15 p.m., according to a press release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.  Medical staff responded immediately and paramedics were requested.  The release stated CPR was done and medical personnel deployed the Automated External Defibrillator. Paramedics declared Jake dead upon arrival.

Jake was a member of the inmate work crew, and worked the morning of his death.  His crew returned as scheduled to Purgatory in the afternoon and Jake was returned to his housing unit, the press release stated.  Security staff at the facility reported conducting a security check in the housing unit shortly after Jake returned, and there were no issues or concerns reported at that time.

The multi-agency Washington County Critical Incident Task Force is conducting the investigation.
