ST. GEORGE – Dixie State College’s literary journal, The Southern Quill, is now accepting submissions for its 2011 edition. Published annually since 1950, The Southern Quill is committed to celebrating the arts in southern Utah. The journal publishes poetry, short fiction, non-fiction and artwork produced by Dixie State College students; it also welcomes material from writers and artists who live in Utah’s Washington and Kane Counties. Recognizing the historical and cultural links between St. George, Utah and Mesquite, Nevada, The Southern Quill is now accepting submissions from residents of Clark County, Nevada, as well.

All DSC students who submit poems will receive consideration for scholarships funded by the Annie Atkin Tanner Memorial program. The Tanner program was established in 1972 by Dr. Vasco M. Tanner to honor his wife Annie. This year, the fund will award $900 in prizes. To determine winners, The Southern Quill’s editorial staff reviews and evaluates every student-written poem, selects the 10 strongest pieces from this pool and forwards them to members of the Tanner family, who determine the first, second and third place winners of the scholarship prizes.

Contributors may submit up to three poems, three works of visual art and/or one short story. The Southern Quill now accepts electronic submissions only. Send materials to [email protected]. Deadline is January 11, 2011.
