Body of local hiker rescued late this evening in Snow Canyon State Park

WASHINGTON COUNTY – Washington County Search and Rescue was able to retrieve the body of a local hiker who went missing yesterday around 6 p.m. in Snow Canyon State Park.

Washington County Sheriff-Elect Cory Pulsipher said Joshua Shillander, 20, was found this morning but volunteers with the Washington County Search and Rescue had to wait until this evening to hike into the canyon due to weather.

According to Det. Nate Abbott, Shillander was hiking yesterday late afternoon with two other individuals on the Island in the Sky trail. Witnesses stated that he fell on the south end of the trail. Abbot said Shillander fell 80 to 100 feet. The two other hikers called for help and were rescued last night by Search and Rescue.

Pulsipher said Shillander’s family was on scene when Search and Rescue returned from the rescue efforts this evening.

“Our volunteers were completely amazing, what they do for us and the service they give,” Pulsipher said. “I don’t know what the heck we would do without them.”
