British politics and economics the focus of next DSC President's Colleagues meeting

ST. GEORGE – Dixie State College of Utah will host its fourth President’s Colleagues of DSC meeting of the 2010-11 academic year on Monday, Jan. 3,  featuring a presentation on the current state of British politics and economic climate by Colleagues member Dr. Steven Austin and DSC associate professor of history Joe Green. The meeting will begin at 12 noon, in Room 156 of the DSC Russell C. Taylor Health Science Center, located on the Dixie Regional Medical Center’s River Road campus at 1526 Medical Center Drive. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Dr. Austin and Professor Green will discuss the topic “The English Revolution: Politics and Economics.” Dr. Austin recently returned to the United States from London, where he and his wife, Claire, are part-time residents. He will describe the changes in the British government, the formation of a new alliance in Parliament, and the major proposals being presented to meet the economic downturn. Meanwhile Professor Green will bring perspective to those proposed changes by discussing the Conservative and Liberal traditions of British politics.

The President’s Colleagues of Dixie State College, founded 18 years ago by former DSC President Dr. Douglas Alder, is a group of retired professors and other professionals who live mostly in the St. George and Washington County area. Dr. Alder, who also started an Honors Program at DSC, organized the Colleagues as a way to increase academic activities on campus.

The Colleagues meet together once a month during the academic year to hear presentations from each other and/or invited guests. On Monday, February 7, 2011, fellow Colleague Boyd Nethercott will discuss the history of the Cuban Missile Crisis, which he witnessed from the inside in 1962.
