SAR rescues couple on the Red Mountains

IVINS – Members of the Washington County Search & Rescue High Angle Team, Ivins Fire and Rescue and Washington County Sheriff’s Office used two helicopters to rescue a couple from the top of the Red Mountains.

SAR Sgt. Jeff Bailey said a couple went hiking yesterday to the top of the Red Mountains on the Kayenta side where they are from. After three hours of hiking, and near the top of the mountain, the woman hurt her right ankle and was not able to hike back down.

Bailey said helicopter pilot Jeremy Johnson took SAR volunteers to the top of the mountain on a “gutsy” landing to rescue the couple. SAR was then able to get to the couple with a rope and help them climb to the top where the helicopter was waiting.

Bailey said the woman had a minor injury and was not taken to the hospital.
