Rachel’s Coffee: For the coffee and non coffee drinkers

Washington City – Rachel’s Coffee is now open for business, located at 471 W. Telegraph in the Old Town and Country Store. Rachel’s Coffee, an independent and locally owned coffee house, owned by Rachel Jordan, offers fresh roasted coffee, freshly prepared bagel sandwiches, Italian sodas, flavored lemonades, smoothies, and a host of other gourmet items for coffee drinkers and non coffee drinkers alike. Breakfast and lunch items are also served.

“What you’re missing is what we have,” Jordan said. "We offer anything hot, ice or blended, even for those who aren't coffee drinkers."

Jordan said the coffee is different than anywhere else in town, and she is starting to see a loyal following from local residents.

"It's very comfortable. It's like my new retreat and I love the coffee-house feel without having to drink coffee," said Sarah Taylor, a convert to Rachel's Coffee, who had to give up coffee drinking until her baby Sophia arrives in January. Until then, she's been drinking raspberry Italian sodas.

Jordan, originally from Henderson, Nev., became acquainted with Washington City while house sitting in the local area. Having an extensive background as a trainer, opening new corporate owned coffee houses, Jordan said to herself often that “if this was mine, this is what I would do different.” She dreamed of opening her own coffee shop for five years, and even traveled to Europe to try the different kinds of coffees from the experts.

When Jordan learned that Old Town and Country was looking to bring a business into a vacant retail space, she put her business plan into words. The rest, you could say, is coffee house history.

According to Jordan, she is very appreciative of the support from Old Town and Country and the designer and artist at Exterior Elements, Yancy Barker. Barker designed the entire layout from start to finish, putting endless hours into the remodel. A photo album on Facebook called Follow the Remodel, has been dedicated to the week-by-week process of turning a vacant space into a one-of-a-kind coffee house.

“The atmosphere and design style at Rachel’s Coffee is a unique and pleasurable experience, in that it triggers all the senses,” Jordan said.

The décor, pointed out Jordan, has “many facets from custom faux painted walls, trim and cabinetry, with a clean and colorful feel, to colorful linens and accessories.” Along with the fine décor, there are large spacious tables, sofas, a television, music, books and free WIFI. For nice weather days, you can sit outside on the patio and enjoy your hot or cold beverage.

Over the years of working in coffee houses, Jordan has gained a dedicated following.

“People are my passion and coffee is my specialty,” Jordan said.

According to Jordan there is a loyalty system in place. Instead of the traditional punch cards, there is a loyalty box kept at the coffee house so you will never have to worry about not bringing a punch card. Once a customer completes 10 punch cards, they will receive a hand-painted mug. Prices are “11 percent cheaper than the large coffee chains and 6-8 percent less than local competitors,” Jordan said.

Rachel’s Coffee is open 7 days a week from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday thru Thursday, 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Sunday 6 a.m.-1 p.m. The hours may fluxate on Saturdays because Rachel's Coffee will be a venue for local bands and artists. The first show begins Nov. 6, with Wes Rowlette, sponsored by Pulse Clothing.

Visit Facebook and search Rachel’s Coffee, you will find happy hour times and double punch days posted, along with other great information.
