ReStore celebrates turning two on Saturday

ST. GEORGE – Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah is having their 2-year anniversary party with a free BBQ on Saturday, October 16. The celebration is taking place at the ReStore, located at 267 East 1400 South, St George. The ReStore was opened for business in Oct of 2008.

According to Tracy Sahleen, manager of the store, they have seen great success in the local area fulfilling the motto of remodel, rebuild, renew and restore. The ReStore is a thrift store, with the items having been donated by businesses and individuals. Items are new and used in good condition, and consist of anything that will help build or decorate a home. Prices for the items are 50 percent or more than can be found at home improvement stores, and there is a bonus of no sales tax, as the store is set up as non-profit.

All proceeds from the ReStore stay in Southern Utah to help low income families acquire a home. With the economy in the situation it is, there has not been a lot of building of homes, the last construction took place in the first quarter of this year. With the changes in the economy, the first foreclosed home has been purchased in La Verkin, and is currently under renovation.

Sahleen said it will be ready, for a soon to be selected family, to move into it for the holidays. The home will be decorated and restored using donations and money received from the local communities and businesses.
“It is like Santa Clause pulling up in his sleigh, you never know what you’re getting when a truck arrives with donations,” said Sahleen.

ReStore Business Partners have donated truckloads of new items. According to Sahleen, many businesses have items taking up valuable space, and by donating to the ReStore, it frees up space and the donors receive a tax benefit for doing so.

The store originally when had a floor space of 5,000 square feet. However, due to so much support from the local community, it has doubled in floor space taking over a vacant adjoining retail space.

Mark the calendar for this year's fall fundraiser taking place on Nov. 6 at the Villa Gardens in St. George. Sahleen said local artists and restaurants have donated their works of art and food for an event you don’t want to miss. Tickets can be purchased at the ReStore for only $10 per person.

Donations are accepted at the store during business hours, Monday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. ReStore can also pick up large donations. For more information, you can visit www.habitat-swu.org and www.stgeorgerestore.com.
