Nine arrested, cited after running from cops in St. George

ST. GEORGE – Officers with the St. George Police Department arrested or issued citations to at least nine individuals after breaking up a house party that was allegedly providing alcohol and marijuana to minors.

Officer Johnny Heppler said officers were in the area of 1700 North and 2130 West when they detected marijuana odor coming from a residence on 1700 North just prior to 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Heppler said officers made contact with those inside the home and several of the partygoers allegedly fled on foot. Officers were able to detain the majority of those who fled, he said.

Heppler said several adults were arrested for resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and providing alcohol to minors, while some of the juveniles were issued citations for minor consumption and failure to stop at an officer’s command.

He said minor consumption is a Class B Misdemeanor but failure to stop for an officer is a Class A Misdemeanor.

“A Class B Misdemeanor typically doesn’t carry jail time if found guilty, but a Class A does,” he said. “If they run, officers pursue an obstruction of justice charge … which is a lot worse, and they probably will see jail time as a result of that. It is always in their best interest to just step up, face the music and take responsibility for their actions.”
