Dixie golfers victorious in Regional tournament

ST. GEORGE – Dixie, Pine View and Snow Canyon boys’ golf teams matched up for an 18-hole tournament Thursday afternoon, with the Flyers coming out ahead.

Dixie’s team total was 299 with individual scores: McCoy Willey – 67; Caden Hamill – 72; Kyo Sasaki – 74; Jeff Glauser – 86, AJ Orchard – 89; Justin Averett – 93; Mason Paxman – 96 and Tanner Wilde – 95.

Snow Canyon’s team total was 321 with Joey Sargent – 79; Carson Cloward – 85; Josh Bridge – 79; Austin Sweaney – 80; Carson Greenhalgh – 90; Evan Reisner – 83; Adam Miler – 83 and James Christiansen – 97.

Pine View’s team scored 323: Jon McBride – 79; Logan Terry – 91; Andrew Shopinski – 76; Brandt Pierce – 82; Hayden Hayward – 86; Ridge Jones – 93; Dylan Edwards – 111 and Parker Feltner – 103.

McCoy Willey of Dixie took first with his score of 67.  This was his eighth victory out of eight Regional tournaments this season. Willey is the two-time 4A defending individual state champion, as well. He is again the favorite going into next week’s state tournament.

Coach Eron Deming said he likes the example Willey sets for the other players.

“Any time the other kids can follow his example for practicing and how to manage the course, they can learn a lot,” Deming said.

The Flyers will look to continue their dominance at the state level on Oct. 18 and 19. Sunbrook Golf Course will be the site of this year’s 3A and 4A state championship. Dixie has won five team championships in a row and seven in the past eight years.

When asked what his team needed to do to win another title, Deming said: “The kids have worked hard all summer to lower their scores from last year. Caden Hamill has been a range-rat for the last few months, and it shows in the scores he is shooting. We have been trying to play ‘smart’ and in control of their emotions and when they are able to do that, the scores have been great. There are lots of good teams so we have our work cut out for us, but it's going to be a lot of fun trying to win another championship.”
