Teens still listed in critical condition

ST. GEORGE – A junior and senior at Snow Canyon High School were critically injured after being hit by lightning this afternoon. At 8:15 p.m., a representative from the University Medical Center in Las Vegas said they are both still listed in critical condition.

Senior Alex Lambson and junior Christopher "Dane" Zdunich were airlifted to the burn unit in Las Vegas.

The two had taken shelter from a rainstorm under a tree after school. They were dragged by school personnel into the band room where CPR was performed until an ambulance arrived.

Sgt. Craig Harding said the two were not walking home, but were waiting outside for friends when the lightning struck. He said skies were clear just minutes before when the teens were "suddenly on the ground." He said the lightning did not hit a tree as previously believed.

Marshall Topham, superintendent of secondary education at the Washington County School District, said the district had someone from the crisis intervention team on hand at Dixie Regional Medical Center for students who had gone to the hospital after the two teens were taken by ambulance. A crisis intervention team will be on hand tomorrow at the school.

The families of the boys were asked if the community could help in any way and they responded: "Pray for us," Topham said.

Topham said the two are still in critical condition, although Harding said it was a good sign that the boys were stable enough to be life flighted.

Dixie Press will have further updates as they become available.
