Cheap entertainment at Comics Plus

ST. GEORGE – Nestled in the heart of Dixie Sunset Plaza, there exists a place that plays home to heroes and villains, adventurers and sports stars, mighty creatures of fantasy and squeezably-soft critters. The name of this haven for imagination and adventure: Comics Plus.

With a diverse selection of comic books, sports cards, movies, toys, models, collectables, and games of all kinds, Comics Plus has a little bit of everything for the pop-culture connoisseur or card-collecting enthusiast.

Store owner David Roland cites inventory diversity as one of the two primary reasons Comics Plus has done well during the current economic climate. The second reason, according to Roland, is because the store offers “a cheap form of entertainment.”

Roland mentioned that certain activities for families have become potentially expensive endeavors. Outings may end up getting squeezed out of the family budget due to the cost, and even then may be undertaken only once in a great while.

Comic books and games on the other hand, can be enjoyed by the whole family time and again, and are relatively inexpensive. This sentiment is echoed in Roland’s almost battle cry-like statement, “I’m cheap.”

Aside from a wide array of products that won’t break the bank, Comics Plus also sports a very family-friendly atmosphere. “I see [walk ins] of all ages,” Roland said, and added that his costumers range anywhere from “seven to seventy.”  It’s quite a change from the 16-30 demographic Comics Plus enjoyed in its original home of Macon, Georgia, where the store opened its doors in 1991.

Comics Plus came to St. George as Roland’s family relocated, and ultimately found a new home in 2007 at Dixie Sunset Plaza.

In the three years since Comics Plus arrived to Southern Utah, Roland said that the reception from the community has “been wonderful.”  Something that has surprised Roland about the area, however, is that the locals are “voracious readers.” A lot of families also come in, he said. Even grandparents walk into the store looking to buy something for their grandchildren. It was a sight Roland never saw while in Georgia.

When asked what the appeal was for the comics and games he sold, Roland replied that they were a great form of escapism. During tough times, he said, people want a hero, so they’ll read stories about superheroes. When it comes to the games people play, Roland said that a group of friends can get together and play for hours while the world fades away.

It’s a sight that’s seen routinely at Comics Plus, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays, as gaming groups come in and sit around one of the tables provided for game play. For people who are curious about these local groups and the games they play, and Comics Plus in general, Roland encourages all to come in, look around, and enjoy.

Comics Plus is located in Dixie Sunset Plaza and is opened Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additional information can be found at www.ComicsPlus.com.
