CERT class open to public

HURRICANE – Residents who want to learn basic first aid, emergency preparedness, triage, fire suppression and other safety skills are invited to register for a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class beginning Oct. 29 in Hurricane Valley.

This 20-hour class is limited to 25 participants. It will be held at the Old White Church in LaVerkin, 111 S. Main St., on two consecutive weekends – Oct. 29 and 30, followed by sessions on Nov. 5 and 6.

Participants will need to set aside the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on each Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the two Saturday sessions. There is a nonrefundable $50 fee for the CERT course, payable at the Hurricane Police Department, 90 S. 700 W., by the end of September. Anyone 12 years of age and over is welcome to register for this disaster preparedness course, which will be taught by CERT instructor Rita Bice.

Each of the skills learned during the CERT class are geared toward preparing individuals to be calm and ready for whatever may happen during a disaster. Students will also participate in a mass casualty exercise at the end of the course, which will allow everyone to practice what they were taught.

For more information about the CERT course or registration, contact Ann Wixom at the Hurricane Police Department, 435-635-9663 ext. 117, or Rita Bice at 435-635-9562.
